REVIEW: 1000 Years of Annoying the French (Stephen Clarke)

Book: 1000 Years of Annoying the French
Author: Stephen Clarke
My rating: 1/5

Premise: Ten centuries' worth of French historical 'facts' bite the dust as Stephen Clarke looks at what has really been going on since 1066.

Let it be known that I'm not one to give up on books...but I couldn't read any more of this! I was really looking forward to reading this. After reading some Philippa Gregory and other historical novels, I wanted to know more about our turbulent history with the French. But I could not get on with this book. The attempt to be witty really put me off! I read a review saying the book was like "Horrible Histories but for adults" and I couldn't agree more. The humour was weak, and at points unnecessary, so detracted from the history itself. The snippets of actual history telling were very interesting, but I couldn't get past the smarmy tone i got from the author and gave up after 50 pages (not much but I couldn't face another 600 pages!). On a side note, if anyone has any history book suggestions, then feel free to comment below!
