Premise: In the crumbling Old City, there stands a hospital which echos with the screams of the poor souls inside. In the hospital, there is a woman. She doesn’t remember why she’s in such a terrible place. Just a tea party long ago, and long ears, and blood. One night, the woman escapes, leaving her free to uncover the truth about what happened to her all those years ago. Only something else has escaped with her. Something dark and powerful. And to find the truth, she will have to track this beast to the very heart of the Old City, where the rabbit waits for his Alice.
[⚠️CW: violence, torture]
I'm a sucker for a retelling/twisted fairytale and oh boy this one didn't disappoint. I loved how dark the author make this book. The rabbit, the walrus - all nasty, nightmarish characters, which did get disturbing at times. Alice was a strong female lead as well, which give this book bonus points in my eyes. The story was fast paced and I read it in a couple of days. The book is violent and unsettling at times (there's rape and hacking people), so be warned when reading. But overall, an interesting and thrilling retelling!
