REVIEW: Flowers for Algernon (Daniel Keynes)
Book: Flowers for Algernon
Author: Daniel Keyes
Author: Daniel Keyes
My rating: 4.5/5.
Premise: Charlie Gordon, IQ 68, is a floor sweep, and the gentle butt of everyone's jokes, until an experiment in the enhancement of human intelligence turns him into a genius. But then Algernon, the mouse whose triumphal experimental transformation preceded his, fades and dies, and Charlie has to face the possibility that his salvation was only temporary.
This beautiful book made me cry all the way through! By page 10, I was already getting quite emotional. The emotional attachment I had for Charlie was so strong, I wanted to hug and protect him. I've have never been so emotionally attached to a book! The story explores how we treat and perceive people with varying levels of intellect, the importance of education, and whether IQ is everything. A thought provoking and emotive book!
