REVIEW: His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman)
Series: His Dark Materials trilogy
Author: Philip Pullman
Author: Philip Pullman
My rating: 4/5
Premise: These thrilling adventures tell the story of Lyra and Will—two ordinary children on a perilous journey through shimmering haunted otherworlds. They will meet witches and armored bears, fallen angels and soul-eating specters. And in the end, the fate of both the living—and the dead—will rely on them.
I'd always meant to read this trilogy and when I heard the BBC and HBO were making a TV adaptation, I thought I'd better read it quick! The first book (in US, it's called The Golden Compass) is set in Lyra's world: a version of our world but with witches, armoured bears and daemons (part of your soul). In the subsequent books, we see more worlds, all different and amazing. There is a strong religious undertone, with the main storyline being a religious allegory, and there are many thought provoking moments. Even as an adult, I thoroughly enjoyed this series and I'm certainly enjoying the TV show so far!
