REVIEW: The Lady of the Rivers (Philippa Gregory)

Book: The Lady of the Rivers
Author: Philippa Gregory
My rating: 4.5/5

Premise: Jacquetta, daughter of the Count of Luxembourg and kinswoman to half the royalty of Europe, was married to the great Englishman John, Duke of Bedford, uncle to Henry VI. Widowed at the age of 19, she took the extraordinary risk of marrying a gentleman of her household for love, and then carved out a new life for herself.

I read The White Queen and enjoyed it, so was very happy to start this book. And it did not disappoint! What I love about this series is that the books can be read in any order but all link together, providing further insight. The War of the Roses is not a period of history that I know well, so from a historical aspect, I found this book very interesting (I can't comment on the historical accuracy, but it at least gives some insight into what those times were like). The book is full of strong women but also reflects how strong women were perceived in those days - "some women cannot March to the beat of a man's drum". This book has certainly piqued my historical interest and I'm excited to read more of the series!
