REVIEW: Mortal Engines (Philip Reeve)
Author: Philip Reeve
My rating: 3.5/5
The Premise: Emerging from its hiding place in the hills, the great traction city of London chases a terrified little town across the wastelands. As London attacks, you apprentice Tom Natsworthy is flung out into the wasteland. His only companion is Hester Shaw, a murderous, scar-faced girl who does not particularly want Tom's company. But if they are to make it back to London, they will need each other's help. London is planning something atrocious, and the future of the world could be at stake.
I hadn't heard of this book before I saw that it was being released as a film. So I bought the book to read before the film and I really enjoyed it! I love a books set in dystopian futures and this one was interesting - I loved the basic idea of cities on wheels, becoming predatory. I loved the strong feme characters in Hester Shaw and how Katherine developed into a strong character. I'm still to watch the film and I am hoping to get my hands on the rest of the series. Despite being a YA novel, it is very readable for adults as well (if you need to get into reading again, this could be a good start!). But overall a good book - one I recommend!
