REVIEW: The White Queen (Philippa Gregory)
Book: The White Queen
Author: Philippa Gregory
Author: Philippa Gregory
My rating: 4/5
Premise: 1464. During the War of the Roses, Elizabeth Woodville, a young widow, seduces and marries the charismatic warrior King, Edward IV of York. Crowned Queen of England, surrounded by conflict, betrayal and murder, Elizabeth rises to the demands of her position, fighting tenaciously for her family's survival. Most of all she must defend her two sons: the missing Princes in the Tower.
Like Lady of the Rivers, I didn't know much about the War of the Roses, so I enjoyed reading about the politics and life during those times. Elizabeth is such a cunning and strong-willed woman in what was very much a man's world - this series is full of string women! The writing style makes it easy to read and definitely piques your interest (I frequently called up Wikipedia to find out more!). So if you like history and strong women, read this book!
The BBC made a TV series of this book a few years ago. The cast and production on the show was very good, and I can thoroughly recommend it!
