REVIEW: Emma (Jane Austen)

Book: Emma
Author: Jane Austen
My rating: 5/5

Premise: Beautiful, spoilt, vain and irrepressibly witty, Emma Woodhouse organizes the lives of the inhabitants of her sleepy little village and plays matchmaker with devastating effect.

I'll admit I hadn't understood people's love of Austen until I read this book! I did vaguely know the story thanks to the film Clueless, but only realised this a few chapters in and the plots differed enough for me to be clueless 😉 of what was coming! I found Emma a very relatable character. There were many aspects to her that I know I've displayed at various points in my life and actually were still relavent today: the cockiness that comes with being part of the "in crowd"; the independence; the silly girl moments when discussing crushes; doing things to just keep appearances up; thinking yourself in love. Some of the other characters could also be related to people we all know - I think we've known chatterboxes like Miss Bates, fake people like Mrs Elton, and constant worriers like Mr Woodhouse! The characters in this book are what made me love it. It was funny, there were twists, there were strong women, and it was still topical by today's standards! Overall, a new favourite for me!
