Desert Island Books #5
Ladies and gentlemen, this is Desert Island Books post number 5! This week, my good friend and singer-songwriter Ellie Dixon has taken the spotlight.
Ellie is an indie artist from Cambridge. What I love about Ellie is her amazing ability to make music from anything - saucepans, windows and watermelons to name just a few. Check her out on Youtube, Spotify, Instagram, etc. for some feel good tunes and top quality content!
Desert Island Scenario
You are going to be stranded on a desert island. You'll have enough provisions to last a year, but no idea when help will come. You can only take 4 books with you to help pass the time.
What is the first book you would take and why?
Digital Fortress by Dan Brown - Yes you can find his books in any charity shop but I just love Dan Brown and this one was probably my favourite to read. It's about coding, crytography and computing which I find super interesting and just remember being gripped the whole time. The twist was absolutely fantastic and it's just the perfect pace - keeps you turning pages the whole time but still paces itself well.
What is the second book and why have you chosen it?
The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff - I adore Winnie the Pooh and I first read this book when I was quite young. It compares the stories of Winnie the Pooh (another book I was considering taking because the writing is so comforting and beautiful) to the teachings of Taoism. It's really incredible how much you can take from these children's stories and they're life lessons I've carried with me. It's a real thought provoking book and would give me the peace I needed if I was stuck and panicking on an island haha.
What is your third book and why?
The Hitchhiker's Guide by Douglas Adams - I love sci fi books and I've read a lot of them so it was hard just picking one. This is just a romp of fun and weirdness. As a weird nerdy kid, Douglas Adams felt like a real home. I loved the way he embraced the bizarre with such confidence and made odd sci fi cool. I will never not laugh at the jokes no matter how many times I read them.
What is your fourth and final choice of book and why would you take it?
Any Calvin and Hobbes book - It's technically a book of comic strips but I just adore Calvin and Hobbes. I've read every book we own cover to cover at least 3 times over since I was 10. Calvin is the perfect embodiment of everyone's inner child that doesn't want to grow up. It's full of genuinely poignant life lessons and lovely fantasy that Calvin creates.
