REVIEW: The Woman in Black (Susan Hill)

Book: The Woman in Black
Author: Susan Hill
My rating: 4/5.

Premise: Arthur Kipps is summoned to attend the funeral Mrs Alice Drablow, the house's sole inhabitant of Eel Marsh House. The house stands at the end of a causeway, wreathed in fog and mystery, but it is not until he glimpses a wasted young woman, dressed all in black, at the funeral, that a creeping sense of unease begins to take hold, a feeling deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk of the woman in black - and her terrible purpose.

I've never tried horror before and I couldn't see how a book could be as scary as a film. Oh how wrong I was! I found that the anticipation was what got my heart racing the most and there were times where I was just waiting for the woman in black to jump out. There was a lot of description, which helped make you feel like you were living the story. One thing I found was how much I despaired over the main character - going back to the creepy house isn't proof you're not a coward, more that you're stupid!!! On the whole, a book full of suspense - I'll definitely try horror again!
