REVIEW: Caraval (Stephanie Garber)

Book: Caraval
Author: Stephanie Garber
My rating: 4.5/5.

Premise: Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. After years of waiting, Scarlett's dream of seeing Caraval—a faraway, magical show—finally comes true. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

I adored this book. The story is a magical treasure hunt with hints of dark doings behind the scenes. Scarlett and Julian have to take part in the game to find her sister, but all the way through, you're never sure what is the game and what is reality. Whilst some aspects of the plot are predictable (like the romance), the rest of it kept me guessing right to the end. Scarlett's develops throughout the story, from a timid character who craves safety, even if it means going along with her father's plans, to a strong woman facing trouble and deciding her own fate. A very enjoyable read!!!
