Books and Diversity

Let's talk diversity ✊🏻✊🏾✊🏿
One of the things I love about being on bookstagram is finding new books. Last year, I pledged to diversify my shelves as one of my responses to the BLM protests. Thanks to bookstagram, I've managed to add these are books by black authors to my shelves (as well as others!).

Diversifying your shelf is so important. Not only are you supporting minority authors, you also learn a lot more about different cultures and get a better idea of the problems different groups face. It's one thing reading the facts about racism, another reading someone's story. But even stepping back from the social issues, I love reading about different cultures! I find it so interesting to see how other people live and understanding the ideologies behind it. Who needs a fantasy world when our own one is rich in culture!

My hope, through diversifying my shelves, is that someone will see review of mine and pick up that book. Or maybe someone will be inspired to diversify their shelves. My voice may be small, but even the little things can help. I'll never get to a point when my shelves are diverse enough, and now I've started to fill in some gaps, I notice others.

What books and authors would you recommend? What's been on your radar?
