REVIEW: Mexican Gothic (Silvia Moreno-Garcia)

Book: Mexican Gothic
Author: Silvia Moreno-Garcia
My rating: 5/5.

Premise: After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find—her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger. But his family have a dark history. There are many secrets behind the walls of High Place and soon the house begins to invade Noemí’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.

I loved this book, so much that I'm still trying to shake off my book hangover! The story follows Noemí as she tries to find out what's made her cousin rave about ghosts and doom. High Place is your classic creepy house: old, run-down, silent. The family are rather sinister, with their very restrictive and old fashioned ways. One family member, Francis is such a lovely character and a real breath of fresh air in the house. As I was reading, I was just praying he wasn't a bad guy! I loved Noemí's character. She's a strong woman who doesn't let men walk all over her. However, she's still human and she is shaken by the more sinister things that happen. The story reminded me of Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, and also of The Woman In Black (although not as scary!). So if you like that spooky vibe, then this is a good book for you!
