REVIEW: The Thursday Murder Club (Richard Osman)

Book: The Thursday Murder Club
Author: Richard Osman
My rating: 3/5.

Premise: In a peaceful retirement village, four friends meet to discuss unsolved crimes; together they call themselves The Thursday Murder Club. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron might be pushing eighty but they still have a few tricks up their sleeves. When a local developer is found dead, the Thursday Murder Club suddenly find themselves in the middle of their first live case. As the bodies begin to pile up, can our unorthodox but brilliant gang catch the killer, before it’s too late?

Who could resist a blurb like this? We have 4 elderly characters making up the murder club. Joyce is the sweet dear who bakes lovely cakes and gets overlooked. Ron is the fiery, opinionated one. Ibrahim is the analytical one. And then there's Elizabeth. I loved her character. She's the leader and there's hints of an exciting past (was she a spy, or was she into some shady stuff? Who knows!). We also have Donna and Chris, the police officers, and some other characters popping up. The old people were all very believable and had me chuckling. My grandparents live in a retirement village so I could picture it all too well! There were quite a few threads in the story that wove together nicely. At times, I found it got repetitive when you're made to think the murderer is being revealed, only for it to be something else, but oh here we go here's the reveal, oh no something else. Also, the plot was a tad jumpy yet slow - there are a lot of characters we follow, but the elderly waffling drags a bit! But overall, a good read!
