REVIEW: Citadel (Kate Mosse)

Book: Citadel
Author: Kate Mosse
My rating: 3.5/5.

Premise: 1942, Nazi-occupied Carcassonne. Sandrine, finds herself into a Resistance group - codenamed 'Citadel' - made up of ordinary women. As the war reaches its violent conclusion, Sandrine's fate is tied up with that of three very different men. But who is the real threat? And who is the true guardian of the ancient secrets of the Pyrenees?

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Despite being 900 pages, it was fast paced and I lapped it up! I loved the main characters and was invested in their stories and relationships. I loved the ending, even though it was sad and not what I was wanting for the characters. There was a magical subplot that was strong at the start but petered out a bit. When it appeared again in the big showdown, I found it actually anticlimactic. Another comment is that, unlike the other books in the series, there were a number of references to the previous books. It's been years since I read the first book so some of the references passed me by. But overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
