REVIEW: The Hound of the Baskervilles (Arthur Conan Doyle)
Author: Arthur Conan Doyle
My rating: 3.5/5.
Premise: When Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead on the wild Devon moorland with the footprints of a giant hound nearby, the blame is placed on a family curse. It is left to Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson to solve the mystery of the legend of the phantom hound before Sir Charles' heir comes to an equally gruesome end.
This is my first Sherlock Holmes story and I really enjoyed it! There's excitement, mystery and intertwining plots. I loved the atmosphere when the story moves to the Devon moors. There's a slight gothic feel at night but a fast pace during the day. An interesting mix but one that worked well. I felt like the reveal came a little too early so there was a wait before the climax rather than a fast paced ending. But overall, I enjoyed it - can't wait for my next Holmes adventure!
