REVIEW: Jamaica Inn (Daphne Du Maurier)
Book: Jamaica Inn
Author: Daphne Du Maurier
My rating: 4/5.
Premise: After the death of her mother, Mary Yellan moves to Jamaica Inn, the home of her Aunt Patience. There she finds Patience a changed woman, downtrodden by her vicious husband Joss Merlyn. Mary discovered that the inn it's a front for a lawless gang of criminals, and is unwillingly dragged into their dangerous world. Despite herself, she becomes powerfully attracted to a man she fears not trust. Before long, Mary will be forced to cross her own moral line to save herself.
Daphne Du Maurier is the queen of suspense and atmosphere. This book was exciting and mysterious. There are shady characters and a lot of danger throughout. Mary is a strong female character, which nicely contrasted her aunt. I loved the setting of the Cornish moors, which added to the gothic vibe. The plot twists and turns a bit, especially towards the end, which had me turning the pages quicker! Another cracker from Du Maurier.
