REVIEW: Vox (Christina Dalcher)
Book: Vox
Author: Christina Dalcher
My rating: 3.5/5.
Premise: The government decrees that women are no longer allowed to speak more than 100 words daily. Soon women can no longer hold jobs. Girls are no longer taught to read or write. Females no longer have a voice. But this is not the end. For herself, her daughter, and every woman silenced, Jean will reclaim her voice.
This dystopian novel was actually scary I found. This near future version of the US is super Christian, reversing women's rights and LGBTQ+ rights. You get a real sense of how restrictive the regime is and how trapped the main characters are.
I think what's scary is how we see some of this today. There's a scene where a girl is being shamed and the boys at school are told to write letters to her using the worst words they could. This sounds unlikely to happen until you take those boys, put them in their bedrooms and swap paper for a keyboard.
