REVIEW: The Devil and the Dark Water (Stuart Turton)

Book: The Devil And the Dark Water
Author: Stuart Turton

Premise: It’s 1634 and Samuel Pipps, the world’s greatest detective, is being transported to Amsterdam, where he is set to face trial for a crime that no one dares speak of. But no sooner is the ship out to sea than devilry begins to blight the voyage. Strange symbols appear on the sails. A figure stalks the decks. Livestock are slaughtered. With Pipps imprisoned, can his loyal bodyguard, Arent Hayes, solve the mystery before the ship descends into anarchy?

I really enjoyed Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle so couldn't wait to pick this one up. The story is a good old murder mystery set on a ship in the 17th century. There were plenty of twists and turns, keeping you stumped the whole way. Towards the end, I wouldn't have been surprised if the devil was real and plaguing the ship! My only criticism is that the events were so impossible that the reveal felt a bit far fetched - super clever, but borderline believable. But still an enjoyable read!
