REVIEW: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (Taylor Jenkins Reid)
Author: Taylor Jenkins Reid
Premise: Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. But as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.
I'd heard a lot of hype around this book and now I've finally read it. The story is quite simply the story of Evelyn's life, interspersed with the present and Monique writing it all down. I liked how the book was structured into parts for each husband and seeing the end of one lead into the next marriage. There was a real sadness in the story, with failed relationships and lost friendships along the way. I liked how calculating Evelyn could be. Behind most of the newspaper stories in her life, she's there be digg the narrative to her will. It gets her into trouble but her imperfections just makes her more human. A fun read.
