REVIEW: The Island of Dr Moreau

Book: The Island of Dr Moreau
Author: HG Wells

Premise: After being shipwrecked, Edward Prendock is plucked from the waves and deposited on a remote island. Here he is the guest of Dr Moreau, whose notorious scientific methods had caused uproar, forcing him to flee London. But Edward soon realises the doctor is continuing his experiments, and that he too is in great danger.

[⚠️TW: animal cruelty]

This book questions the morality of scientific experiments and what it means to be human. I can appreciate that at the time of its release, it would've been groundbreaking! There is a gothic horror edge to the story as at first you're not sure what these experiments are and then the last third of the book is fighting to survive.

I'm not sure I was quite in the right mood for this book, but it was very short so I flew through it. The start was a bit slow but the pace gradually ramped up once we reached the island, and there was enough mystery to keep you hooked.
