REVIEW: Realm Breaker (Victoria Aveyard)

Book: Realm Breaker
Author: Victoria Aveyard

Premise: In a small town at the edge of the sea, fate knocks on Corayne's door. Joining forces with a mythical immortal and a lethal assassin, Corayne learns that she is the last of an ancient lineage—with the power to save the world from destruction. Alongside an unlikely group of reluctant allies, Corayne finds herself on a desperate journey to complete an impossible task, with untold magic singing in her blood and the fate of the world on her shoulders.

Fantasy novel about a band of unlikely allies saving the world? Naturally I had to read this! However, I'm split on this one.

Right from the start, you're thrown into the deep in, having to quickly grasp the world in which the story is set. There's a lot of world building in this book. Annoyingly my copy didn't include a map, which would've been very helpful!

With a lot of world building, there was little room for plot, especially early on. There were bits of action dotted around, although most of it was right at the end. Most of the earlier plot was building up the politics. This made the story a bit slow to get into.

The cast was fun, although I liked some more than others and I wanted more development. I love Sorasa the assassin and Sigil the bounty hunter. Honestly I'd read about those two badass women any day! Corayne needed more development as she ended up just being baby sat for most of the book. I loved the villain romance and how strong the female antagonist was.

A mixed bag overall.
