REVIEW: Elektra (Jennifer Saint)
Book: Elektra
Author: Jennifer Saint
Premise: Clytemnestra's hopes are dashed when her husband determines to win a war whatever the cost. Cassandra is cursed by Apollo to see the future but never to be believed. Elektra is horrified by the bloodletting of her kin. This is the story of three women, their fates inextricably tied to this curse, and the fickle nature of men and gods.
I loved this book! It's a retelling of Clytemnestra's story but with the added perspectives of her daughter Elektra and the Princess of Troy Cassandra. The story is a tragedy and I think has a lot more grit than Jennifer's previous book Ariadne. It's a story of betrayal, revenge, motherhood and grief.
I liked the contrast between Clytemnestra and Elektra, seeing them at odds and a hatred growing. Elektra is devoted to her father, Agamemnon, whereas Clytemnestra is blinded by hatred. But eventually the roles reverse and Elektra is the one seeking revenge. Cassandra was a more tragic figure, seeing the effects of the whims of men but being powerless to stop them. I loved her fiery and angry character. She helped bring a greater sense of injustice to the story and show how each of their lives are linked.
Probably my favourite Greek retelling so far!
