REVIEW: The House with the Golden Door

Book: The House with the Golden Door
Author: Elodie Harper

Premise: Amara has escaped her life as a slave in the town's most notorious brothel, but now her existence depends on the affections of her patron. Amara longs for the women she was forced to leave behind and worse, finds herself pursued by the man who once owned her. In order to be free, she will need to be as ruthless as he is.

[TW: prostitution, slavery, violence, sexual violence]

I'm really enjoying this series. We pick up just after the previous book ended. Amara is free but her status depends on her patron, who she's slowly being less enamoured by. We see throughout how precarious her position is and the hard decisions she has to make to survive.

I love strength of the female characters in this book and the friendships they forge. Britannica is so fierce and loyal to Amara, going as far as teaching her self defence. There are also other courtesans who help Amara navigate this new life and make powerful connections.

I am so excited for the next book. I just can't believe I have to wait so long for it!
