REVIEW: Never Let Me Go (Kazuo Ishiguro)

Book: Never Let Me Go
Author: Kazuo Ishiguro

Premise: Kathy and her friends grew up at the seemingly idyllic Hailsham School, where students learn the arts but have no contact with the wider world. Years later, she attempts to come to terms with her childhood and with the fate that has always awaited her and her closest friends in the outside world.

This book questions morals and the ethics of medical advances. We have people being raised specifically for organ donations. There's questions over what it means to be human. It highlights human flaws, such as our ability to turn away when presented with unethical practices underlying everyday life. We see a selfishness when it comes to the survival of ourselves and our loved ones. So a lot of food for thought.

I think I felt slightly let down though. Maybe I was expecting something with more of a shocking twist when actually it's revealed early on what their fates are. Maybe I was expecting this great masterpiece and it didn't quite meet my expectations. Not sure, but it didn't quite satisfy me.
