REVIEW: Daisy Jones and the Six (Taylor Jenkins Reid)

Book: Daisy Jones and the Six
Author: Taylor Jenkins Reid

Premise: Everybody knows Daisy Jones and the Six. Their sound defined an era. Their albums were on every turntable. They sold out arenas from coast to coast. Then, on 12 July 1979, Daisy Jones walked barefoot on to the stage at the Whisky. And it all came crashing down.

[TW: alcoholism, drugs, addiction]

The book follows the creation of the band, the making of their last album and how things fell apart. There's a lot of heavy drug use as the band lived that classic 70s rock and roll life. The ending was bittersweet for all characters I felt. For each of them, there was a conflicts of what they wanted, what others wanted, band life and their private lives.

What I loved the most was how the book was written. It's a mockumentary in book form, constructed from interview transcripts. Sounds weird, but it really works! I think it made you feel closer to each character because you were reading from all of their points of view and seeing all sides of each bit of the story at the same time. Such a cool concept, pulled off perfectly!
