REVIEW: Memphis (Tara M. Stringfellow)
Book: Memphis
Author: Tara M. Stringfellow
Premise: Joan was only a child the last time she visited Memphis. She doesn't remember the bustle of Beale Street...but she does remember her cousin Derek. As Joan learns more about her family's past she discovers she's not the only North woman to have experienced great hurt. But she also sees their resilience and courage.
This is a gorgeous book. It's gritty. The characters have all faced traumas, racism, and injustice. But there's also sisterhood and beauty shining through the pages. The writing is sumptuous and poetic. The narrative is split across 4 women within the North family and jumps around in time. The author manages to weave it all together. You get hooked and you feel like you know the characters. You feel their joys and their pain.
Honestly, just a really really good book!
