Premise: Growing up in a distant Yucatan estate, Carlota is the only daughter of an eccentric genius. His experiments, a group of hybrid monstrosities, are blindly loyal to their creator. In the sweltering heat of the jungle, amidst her father's secrets and her own awakening feelings, Carlota will begin asking questions that could ignite a conflagration.

Another cracker from Silvia Moreno-Garcia. This is a retelling of The Island of Doctor Moreau but set in Mexico. It's a coming of age story as well, following Carlota as strangers disrupt her world. There's a sense of danger and brewing tension throughout, that culminates in an action packed ending. I loved the historical aspect as well, seeing the politics and conflicts in Mexico in the 19th century. I really enjoyed this book!
