REVIEW: Violeta (Isabel Allende)

Book: Violeta
Author: Isabel Allende

Premise: Violeta comes into the world on a stormy day in 1920, the first girl in a family of five boisterous sons. Her life will be shaped by some of the most important events of history: the fight for women's rights, the rise and fall of tyrants, and, ultimately, not one but two pandemics.

I found this book super interesting. It essentially describes 20th century history of South America (in particular, Chile). I learned so much: how society changed; how these countries fit in with world events; the dictatorships; pandemics; natural disasters. I was googling so many things as I went! It's not just history that's covered either. We also have topics such as drugs, domestic violence, poverty, etc. So many areas of life and humanity!

I loved the character of Violeta. She is confident, unashamed of her sexuality, and becomes a big feminist later on in life. I'd have loved to have met her!
