REVIEW: We Have Always Lived in the Castle (Shirley Jackson)

Book: We Have Always Lived in the Castle
Author: Shirley Jackson

Premise: Merricat just wants to preserve the delicate way of life in the Blackwood family home. But ever since her sister Constance was acquitted of murdering the rest of the family, the world isn't leaving the Blackwoods alone. And when Cousin Charles arrives, Merricat must do everything in her power to protect the remaining family.

This book is dark, sad and claustrophobic. Yet it's also quite humorous. Merricat lives with her sister and Uncle. She is very particular about warding off evil and obsessed with maintaining their way of life. Which means when Charles arrives, she has to get rid of him. Her scheming leads to chaos and frenzy. Ultimately I felt really sad for Constance and all she puts up with.

Overall, a good book!
