REVIEW: A Day of Fallen Night (Samantha Shannon)
Book: A Day of Fallen Night
Author: Samantha Shannon
Premise: Tunuva Melim is a sister of the Priory. Queen Sabran of Inys has married the new King of Hróth, and their daughter, Glorian, trails in their shadow. Dumai has spent her life in a Seiiki mountain temple, trying to wake the gods from their long slumber. When the Dreadmount erupts, bringing terror and violence, these women must find the strength to protect humankind from a devastating threat.
This is a prequel to Priory of the Orange Tree. I really enjoyed diving back into this world. While there was some overlap in world building, I appreciated the reminder as it'd been a couple of years since I read TPOTOT.
Yet again, there are a lot of strong female characters. Each of the female protagonists were showing strength, making tough decisions and leading their people. There was also a strong theme of motherhood and loss throughout. There were some character that had abrupt ends that left me heart-broken.
One thing to note is that this book is more about people surviving evil rather than questing to defeat evil. This meant the ending was slightly anticlimactic and parts of the plot were slow. I'd recommend reading TPOTOT first so that you get invested in the world. Then ADOFN will enrich the world further.
