REVIEW: My Name is Why (Lemn Sissay)
Book: My Name Is Why
Author: Lemn Sissay
Premise: At the age of seventeen, after a childhood in a foster family followed by six years in care homes, Norman Greenwood was given his birth certificate. He learned that his real name was not Norman. It was Lemn Sissay. He was British and Ethiopian. And he learned that his mother had been pleading for his safe return to her since his birth.
This autobiography gives you an insight into the world of care and fostering. It was heart-breaking to see how people treated Lemn and how the treatment changed over time. It's also angering. You can't help but want to shake some of these people and go "HE'S A CHILD! Give him some slack!". But also how he was taken and kept from his birth mother was appalling. A quick yet powerful read.
