REVIEW: The Maiden (Kate Foster)

Book: The Maiden
Author: Kate Foster

Premise: Edinburgh, October 1679. Lady Christian Nimmo is charged with the murder of her lover, James Forrester. What led her to risk everything for an affair? And does that make her guilty of murder? She wasn't the only woman in Forrester's life who might have wished him dead.

This based on true events from 17th century Scotland. There's dual timelines in the book. One is Lady Christian in prison awaiting her execution. Then there's the flashbacks covering what happened leading up to the murder. There are three women at the centre of this story, all from different walks of life. Yet they were all powerless and dependent on the whims of a man. The man in question was vile and you could understand why someone was pushed to the point of murder. A sad story but a good read. Only criticism was that it was slow at points.
