REVIEW: Lady Audley's Secret (Mary Elizabeth Braddon)

Book: Lady Audley's Secret
Author: Mary Elizabeth Braddon

Premise: Lady Audley arrives at the manor: young, beautiful - and very mysterious. Why does she behave so strangely? What, exactly, is the dark secret this seductive outsider carries with her?

I went into this book knowing what the secret was, although it does become clear quite quickly. The story is mostly Robert Audley investigating his new aunt. It's quite an easy read and was exciting at times. However, it was slow at parts and I didn't enjoy some of the internal monologues. At times I felt sorry for Lady Audley as she had clearly suffered from the trappings of society. The ending had a nice twist, which I wasn't expecting but was most welcome. An enjoyable classic.
