REVIEW: Lord of the Flies (William Golding)
Book: Lord of the Flies
Author: William Golding
Premise: After a plane crash, a group of schoolboy are stranded on an unchartered island with no adult supervision. At first, their freedom is something to celebrate. But soon order collapses, as strange howls echo in the night, and the hope of adventure seems as far from reality as the hope of being rescued.
I studied this book at school but wanted to read it again, this time for pleasure. The story considers what might happen to a group of children stranded on an island. Some stick to order, whereas others start to give in to a more primal nature. Yet we're still reminded that these are children; they have these irrational fears, they will blindly follow of figures of authority, and there is a cruelty in how they pick on each other.
However, while I can appreciate the importance of the book, there was something missing for me. It might that I wasn't in the right mindset, or maybe this book just isn't for me.
