REVIEW: Vampires of El Norte (Isabel Cañas)

Book: Vampires of El Norte
Author: Isabel Cañas

Premise: As the daughter of a rancher in 1840s Mexico, Nena knows a thing or two about monsters—her home has long been threatened by tensions with Anglo settlers from the north. But something more sinister lurks near the ranch at night, something that drains men of their blood and leaves them for dead.

This book is historical fiction meets horror meets romance. It took a while to set up the story (the actual premise is longer) so I found the story a bit slow to start. But from about half way, you get some action and then the main duo going on perilous journey. On the whole, I found the balance between romance and horror was skewed too much towards the former, with the romantic brooding getting repetitive. But when we got a horror bit, the atmosphere was set perfectly and I was gripped.
