TUTORIAL: Book Christmas Tree

I saw a video on Instagram of someone making Christmas tree decorations out of old books and had to have a go myself! I persuaded a friend to join in and we had a fun afternoon crafting. It was actually really straight forward to make these trees so here is my tutorial.

Materials:

  • A paperback book
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Decorations
  • (optional) Christmas music
  • (optional) a friend to craft with
  • (optional) festive snacks
Makes at least one tree - depends on length of book! You'll want to allow at least 75 page leaves (150 by page numbers) per tree.

Time:
30mins - 1 hour per tree

Instructions:

1. Remove the cover off the paperback.

Tip: for thick books, I recommend cutting into smaller, more manageable chunks (see above for recommended pages per tree)

2. Fold the top corner of the first page to the middle so that the top edge of the page is flush with the spine.

3. Line up that folded edge with the spine and fold.

4. Tuck in the overlap at the bottom to give a flat base

5. Turn the page and repeat on the next page.

Tip: you might find the folds at the top start getting in the way. I'd recommend regularly breaking the spine to keep this top corner free

6. Once all pages have been folded, glue the last page to the first one

7. Adjust the spread of the pages to remove large gaps

8. Decorate your tree! I used glitter and made a star, but I've seen ribbon, bows, string, gems, etc.

9. Display and admire 😊
