I went into this book with the vague premise above and nothing else. And wow, I was hooked! There's three female protagonists that we following through their respective timelines. The story switches between Alice and the past, with the modern mystery being unravelled right back to the beginning with Maria in 16th century Spain. There's an underlying theme of these women breaking free of society, and specifically men. There's queer love and a variety of characters. Really enjoyed this book.
