REVIEW: Crown of Midnight (Sarah J Maas)

Book: Crown of Midnight
Author: Sarah J Maas
My rating: 3.5/5.

Premise: Celaena Sardothien is bold, daring and beautiful - the greatest assassin her world has ever known. But though she won the King's contest, Celaena has been granted neither her liberty nor the freedom to follow her heart. She faces a choice that is tearing her to pieces: kill in cold blood for a man she hates, or risk sentencing those she loves to death. Celaena must decide what she will fight for: survival, love or the future of a kingdom. Because an assassin cannot have it all ... And trying to may just destroy her.

Let the fantasy begin! This book picks up a few months on from Throne of Glass. Celaena is given names of traitors to dispatch of, but instead of killing them, she fakes their deaths and let's them flee. Of course, she can't tell the king that, but he's obviously plotting something and Celaena is going to find out what. Throughout the book, Celaena struggles with the injustices she sees but she's reluctant to rebel given all the people she's lost. I love her character. She is ruthless, sassy and badass, but also loves reading and clothes. I like this juxtaposition, allowing the assassin to have a feminine side, to be a normal person! To me, it makes her more realistic and helps me relate to her (I mean, she's a book nerd for crying out loud!!!). In the second half of the book, the magic starts to kick in and we're left with a big old revelation that makes me need the next book.
